Terms of use

What you can expect from loop, and what we ask of you. Written to be read — if anything here is unclear, ask us and we will explain it.

1. About these terms

These terms apply when you use loop.study to request or take tutoring lessons. By creating an account you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use loop.

loop.study is operated by Loop Education Limited, a company registered in New Zealand, NZBN 9429053948748. These terms are an agreement between you and that company. You can reach us at patrick@loop.study.

2. Who can use loop

A loop account must be created and held by a parent or legal caregiver aged 18 or over. Students use loop through their parent’s account. You are responsible for what happens on your account, including keeping your password to yourself.

Please give us accurate information about your child — their year level, subject and how they learn. The quality of the match depends on it.

3. What loop is, and what a tutor is

loop connects your child with a registered New Zealand teacher for a live online lesson, on demand. Tutors are independent contractors, not loop employees.

That said, we do not hide behind it. loop chooses who is allowed to teach, verifies their registration, sets the standards they teach to, records every lesson, reviews the quality of what happened, takes the payment and handles complaints. If a lesson goes wrong, come to us.

4. How a lesson works

  1. You request a lesson in a subject. We notify tutors who are free.
  2. The request stays open for 30 minutes. If nobody takes it, it expires and you are not charged.
  3. When a tutor accepts, we place a hold on your card and you can join the lesson.
  4. The lesson runs. Afterwards you are charged for the time taught, and you receive a written report.

You can have one lesson running at a time. We cannot promise that a tutor will always be available in a given subject at a given moment — loop depends on who is free, and sometimes nobody is.

5. Paying for lessons

Payments are handled by Stripe. A lesson is a 20-minute block for $30, GST included. Charging, holds, and every case in which you are not charged are set out in our refunds and cancellations policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: nothing is charged until a tutor accepts, the price is the price, and a lesson that fails in its first five minutes is not charged at all.

6. Lessons are recorded

Every loop lesson is recorded — video, audio and the shared whiteboard. By using loop you consent to this on your own behalf and on behalf of your child, and you confirm you are able to give that consent for them. What we record, who can see it and how long we keep it are in our recording notice.

If you are not comfortable with your child’s lessons being recorded, loop is not the right service for you, and we would rather say that plainly than bury it.

7. What we ask of you

  • Be present or nearby. Your child is meeting an adult they have not met before, online.
  • Do not record, screenshot or share a lesson yourself. It contains another person too.
  • Keep contact with tutors inside loop. Do not ask a tutor for their personal contact details or to teach outside the platform — they are required to refuse.
  • Treat tutors with respect. Abuse, harassment or discriminatory behaviour towards a tutor will end your account.
  • Do not use loop to cheat — to sit an assessment, or to have work done that will be handed in as your child’s own.
  • Do not share your account with anyone outside your household.

8. What we are responsible for

We are responsible for running loop with reasonable care and skill: for who we let teach, for the standards we hold them to, for the platform working, and for handling it properly when something goes wrong.

Nothing in these terms limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986. Those rights apply to tutoring supplied to you as a consumer and cannot be excluded, restricted or modified by agreement, and we are not trying to.

What we cannot promise: a particular academic result, that a tutor will be available at a particular moment, or that the internet will behave. Where a lesson is affected by a technical failure, the refunds policy says what we do about it.

9. Safety

Every tutor is a registered New Zealand teacher with a current practising certificate that we check and keep checking. Our child safety page sets out the standards they sign up to and how to raise a concern. If you are ever worried about anything in a lesson, contact us — every lesson is recorded and we can look.

10. Suspending or closing an account

You can close your account at any time by asking us. We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, that puts a child or a tutor at risk, or where payment repeatedly fails. Where we can tell you why, we will. Where a safeguarding concern means we cannot say everything, we will still tell you that a decision has been made.

11. Your information

What we collect and why is in our privacy policy. Both it and the recording notice form part of these terms.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date below changes when we do, and where a change is significant we will tell account holders directly. A change does not affect a lesson already taught.

13. New Zealand law

These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction over any dispute about them.
